nice HD: Control. Content. Wired and Wireless

HD video streaming to every seat (wireless/wired)

Lufthansa Technik AG will be providing a "glimpse" of its newest HD-capable networked integrated cabin management Ethernet system, "nice HD", at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. nice HD is a Cabin Management and Inflight Entertainment (CMS/IFE) distribution system for data and content; it provides the means for passengers to control their environment, watch movies, listen to music, and interface to other aircraft systems. nice HD includes both wired and wireless standard interfaces to control the cabin environment and push/pull content to embedded displays or personal devices (smartphones and tablets with Apple, Android, Windows system software).

nice HD has had a successful market introduction as it has already been chosen as baseline on five OEM production aircraft. nice HD is an Ethernet based system that is built to interface with other IP standards based systems; IP standards are employed by nearly all consumer based electronic development over the last 10 years. The IFE component of the system includes a built-in Digital Rights Management (DRM) framework which allows licensed protected content to be legally distributed and played-back. Innovation has also created a universal web-app to provide wireless system control and content management via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) displayed on a personal device (Apple, Android, and Windows).

At the heart of the system is the Media Center Unit. It is a multi-purpose LRU which includes a Blu-ray Player, a moving map server (niceview 3D), and a private/licensed content AVoD server. All three of the functions can be hosted on the unit at one time; the unit can be configured with one, two, or all three of the functions and can be up-graded (adding a feature) in the field with software loaded on the USB port on the front of the unit.

The AVoD server functionality provides for the industries first "turn-key" AVoD solution. It allows embedded distribution within the wired network, wireless distribution to personal devices (Apple, Android, and Windows), private and licensed content storage and distribution, the ability to pull content from an embedded server and push content from a 3rd party device to the nice HD network, and a Licensed Content Service supported by multiple studios for non-theatrical release (private and public viewing).

Quality and reliability were priorities in the development and production of the nice HD system. Lufthansa Technik's Business Unit Innovation employs the latest testing and quality assurance procedures which includes Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT) and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) used during development and production.
